The right-hander underwent season-ending elbow surgery last season, and before his first rehab start on Wednesday, the Rangers ace hadn’t taken the mound since April 28, 2023.
In deGrom’s first rehab start with Double-A Frisco, the 36-year-old allowed one run and two hits through two innings.
The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner also retired three batters. DeGrom threw a total of 29 pitches but is expected to increase his workload with each rehab start.

DeGrom is still a work in progress, but the second start in his rehab assignment is a step in the right direction. The right-hander is expected to increase his pitch count in Tuesday’s start against Oklahoma City.
He is expected to make a total of four rehab starts before returning to the Rangers rotation.
The Cy Young Award winner is eager to return to the Texas pitching staff for some normalcy to his routine.
“It’s very important,” deGrom told NBC Sports. “That way, I can treat the offseason a little bit more normal. If I don’t get out there, it’s going to feel like I’ve been rehabbing all that time through, whatever that is, almost a year and a half.”
“Once you get out there, you’re competing,” deGrom added. “That’s what we love to do. I’ve missed a year of it and kind of like want to be out there. This is the first step of it.”
The pitcher made just six starts for Texas before being undergoing his second major elbow surgery. DeGrom has dealt with a number of injuries throughout his MLB career.
Despite deGrom’s looming return to the big leagues, it won’t change the fate of his clubhouse. The defending World Series champions are essentially out of playoff contention given they are 10 games back in the American League West.
Nevertheless, deGrom is slated to return to Texas in early September. He could potentially return to the mound against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Sept. 10-11, or the Seattle Mariners, Sept. 12-15, depending on the progress he makes.
DeGrom’s return so late in the season would mean the right-hander would only be able to make three or four major league starts for the Rangers.
