23 fish stocks have been destroyed in a terrible fire at Mahipur fishing port of Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali. The fire took place around 9 pm on Friday.
Later, two units of Kalapara Fire Service reached the spot and brought the fire under control with efforts of about one and a half hours. It caused more than 3 crore rupees loss to 23 owners.
This was confirmed by Raju Ahmed Raja, general secretary of the Mahipur Fishery Owners Association.
Ilyas Hossain, Team Leader of Kalapara Fire Service Unit, said that due to the narrowness of the road, there was some delay in their post at the spot, but as the river was very close, they were able to bring the fire under control in a relatively short time. He also said that the work of assessing the damage is going on.
Eyewitnesses said the southerly wind and the coxsit, nets and flammable materials in the fish nets caused the fire to spread in no time.
Kalapara Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Rabiul Islam said, we will form a committee from the upazila administration. They will investigate the extent of the damage and the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Mohibur Rahman expressed his deep condolences to the businessmen affected by the terrible fire at Mohipur fishing port. He left Dhaka on Friday night after hearing the news of the incident. On Saturday at 10 am, he will visit the affected place in Mohipur and express his condolences to the affected businessmen.
