3.2 million coastal children at risk of cyclones

More than 8.4 million people in the coastal region of Bangladesh are at risk of health, nutrition, sanitation and insecurity due to Cyclone Remal, including 3.2 million children. This information was reported in a statement signed by Sheldon Yate, UNICEF representative in Bangladesh on Monday (May 27).

According to the statement, Bhola, Patuakhali and Bagerhat districts were the most affected by the cyclone. Many upazilas there have been flooded. At this critical moment, our only effort is to reach the children and their families affected by the storm.

UNICEF has been on the ground since the beginning and has been supporting the government from early warning campaigns and efforts to ensure rapid and effective post-cyclone response, the statement said. UNICEF has stocked 35 warehouses nationwide with water purification tablets, jerrycans, mobile toilets, hygiene and family kits for distribution to affected communities and shelters.

Besides, we have two service delivery teams (Rapid Response Teams) ready to be deployed in the most affected areas.

It also said that as part of initial efforts, UNICEF plans to reach out to people in coastal areas including Rohingya camps and Cox's Bazar. However, there is a lack of adequate funding to meet the immediate needs of girls, women and persons with disabilities in all sectors.

“We are working closely with the government and stakeholders to monitor the situation,” said Sheldon Yate. Also, we are ensuring coordinated efforts to provide quick assistance and relief if necessary. Our priority is to protect the lives and ensure the welfare of the most marginalized people; Especially children, who are most vulnerable during such disasters.

He said, “We are committed to stand by the people of Bangladesh in this difficult time and provide everything necessary to help them recover from the effects of Cyclone Remal.”
