49ers’ Sticky Contract Situation Receives Intriguing Update

While the San Francisco 49ers have done well in free agency so far this offseason, there is still something of a dark cloud hanging over the franchise.

Trent Williams, the Niners’ excellent left tackle, has been engaged in a contract standoff with the front office. The team just declined his $10 million option bonus, and while he is scheduled to earn $32 million this coming season, it will be the final year on his contract.

Even though Williams is 37 years of age, he apparently wants to keep playing past 2026. His contract currently doesn’t have any guaranteed money, and the Niners want to rework it, but neither side has been able to come to an agreement.

NFL insider Mike Florio gave an update that may sound positive from San Francisco’s point of view, but he added that Williams may be unhappy if this contract standoff plays out the way it seems it will.

“They don’t want to pay the guy $32M in cash to a guy who is gonna turn 38 in July. The problem with no guarantees in the contract, the 49ers can just squat and wait. As time goes by other teams will have blown their budgets and Trent Williams is more likely to take the 49ers best offer because there may not be a better offer out there because all those teams have spent their money. That’s the game the 49ers are playing and if I were Trent Williams, I’d be pissed about it.”

Williams is indispensable for the 49ers

Williams has made the Pro Bowl in 12 of the last 14 seasons, including this past season, and he will almost certainly be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame following his retirement. He’s the main enforcer on the 49ers’ offensive line, an offensive line that has had its issues over the years and still needs a couple of reinforcements.

Pro Football Focus ranked him third among 89 offensive tackles with an overall grade of 91.5, second in run block grade and 12th in pass block grade for the 2025 season. He appeared in 16 games this past season, and while the Niners suffered a big rash of injuries to key players for the second year in a row, they went 12-5 and reached the divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan, per NBC Sports Bay Area, sounds like he has faith that a satisfactory resolution will be reached between the two sides.

“No updates from me,” Shanahan said when asked if there were any new developments with Williams. “I actually stay pretty much out of that. I know John [Lynch] and everyone is working hard to do that. I believe we will get that done. We love Trent too much and eventually that will work out.”

Could this be the end of Williams’ time in the Bay?

Williams’ cap hit for the 2026 season is currently at $46.3 million. Jason La Confora of SportsBoom recently reported that a trade “is hardly out of the question” if the two sides cannot come to an agreement soon enough.

The 49ers have been through this type of contract drama before, as one of their key players has held contentious contract talks with them seemingly every offseason, only to eventually come to an agreement. Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa and Brandon Aiyuk have all gone down this road, but the problem is that this type of situation threatens to muck up training camp, as it apparently did in 2024 when Aiyuk staged a hold-in during training camp.

He eventually agreed to a four-year, $120 million extension, but he played poorly that season and tore his ACL in October. He hasn’t played since, and it is generally believed that, one way or another, he will not play another snap for the team.

The Niners, who have suffered a number of heartbreaking losses in big playoff games during the Shanahan era and haven’t won the Super Bowl championship since the 1994 season, can only hope Williams doesn’t go down a similar road.
