70,000 families are trapped in the flood in Mirsrai


Mirsarai of Chittagong has drowned as the water of Feni river and Muhuri river flowed over the boundary. Village after village is drowning in water. Since last Wednesday afternoon, local volunteers have been taking flood-affected people to shelters on their own initiative.

On Thursday (August 22), the army, fire service and various political party leaders were seen evacuating common people from the flooded areas to safe shelters. Electricity connection has been disconnected in various villages of the upazila since morning.

It has been reported that various villages of Amlighat, Kerhat, Hinguli, Bariyarhat Municipality, Lower area of ​​Mirsarai Municipality, Zorarganj, Ichakhali, Katachra, Durgapur, Mithanala, Khaiachra, Osmanpur, Wahedpur Union of Mirsarai Upazila have been flooded. Apart from this, West Zoar of Kerhat Union, Alinagar Village, Katagang, Azamnagar, East Azamnagar and Khilmurali of Hinguli Union; Flood water is also increasing in Friday Yahat, Minabazar, Anandabazar villages of Dhum Union.

About 70,000 families have been trapped in the flood. All gates of sluice gates have been opened as the water level of Mahamaya Lake in Mirsarai, the second largest artificial lake in the country with an area of ​​11 square kilometers, has risen close to the danger level. Several villages of Durgapur, Katachra and Ichakhali Union of the upazila are getting flooded again.

Since Thursday morning, the Chittagong-bound lane in the Sonapahar area of ​​the Dhaka-Chittagong highway has been submerged by a hill. Due to this, the vehicle is moving very slowly.

It can be seen on the surface, due to 6 consecutive days of rain and the water of Feni river flowing over the flood limit, educational institutions, crop lands and hundreds of fish ponds of the upazila have been submerged.

From last Wednesday afternoon, local volunteers took some people to safe shelters by boat. Volunteers were engaged in rescue work on Thursday morning as well, but army personnel, fire service personnel and leaders of various political parties were seen coming down in the afternoon.

Electricity connection has been stopped in some areas due to the fear of accidents. Most of the problems occurred with the elderly and children.

Mirsarai Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Upazila Administrator Mahfuza Zerin said that all educational institutions, government offices, Union Parishad (UP) offices have been kept open as shelters in Mirsarai, including 79 shelters.

He said that so far 1700 people have been evacuated to safe shelter. Rescue operations are being conducted with speedboats to rescue the rest. More than 30 speed boats are working to rescue the stranded.

He also said that in Mirsarai upazila, about 70,000 families are in a state of waterlogging. Allotment of 50 metric tons of rice has been received from the Deputy Commissioner. The water of Feni river is flowing over Bipatsima. Fire service and local youth volunteers are working to rescue flood affected people. Army personnel also participated in the rescue operation.
