The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) said it has received information about the illegal acquisition of “huge wealth” by Sheikh Hasina, who gave information about one of her pawns being the 'owner of Tk 400 crore' in her last press conference, a few days before she left the post of Prime Minister.

In the press conference, Sheikh Hasina herself complained and said, 'My house has been done, peon. He also now owns 400 crore rupees. Can't go without a helicopter….' This statement sparked widespread criticism at the time.

After the change of power. ACC has collected information about the fourth class employee named Jahangir Alam. A report regarding his irregularities and corruption has been received by the ACC, according to Aktarul Islam, Public Relations Officer and Deputy Director of the agency.

According to the ACC, Jahangir Alam of Naharkhil village of Khilpara union of Chatkhil upazila of Noakhali belongs to a low class family. He used to work in the National Parliament on daily wages. He started owning finance in 2009 after the Awami League government came to power.

Using the identity of the Prime Minister's personal assistant, he used to lobby for 'recruitment trade, transfers'. He used to influence the politics of Noakhali, recruitment trade, tender bidding, lobbying in the administration. He was also the Vice President of Chatkhil Upazila Awami League of Noakhali.

According to the report, in the last 12th Parliament, he submitted nomination papers to participate in the election from Noakhali-1 (Chatkhil-Sonaimuri) constituency. In the affidavit, he gave the information of immovable and immovable assets worth about 21 crore rupees in his name. Wife Kamrun Nahar's name of assets of Tk 7 crore 30 lakhs.

“Jahangir has shown more than 4.5 acres of agricultural land in his own name, non-agricultural land worth Tk 3 crore 19 lakh, two shops in Mohammadpur and Newmarket, a seven-storey building in Mirpur, a one-storey building in a village house and two flats in Mirpur (price estimated at Tk 44 lakh 69 thousand). In addition, he built a four-storey house in Chatkhil's ancestral home. A flat of 2,360 square feet in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, in the name of his wife, is priced at Tk 76,18,750. Jahangir's family has an eight-storey house in Harinarayanpur area of ​​Maizdi, Noakhali. 18 out of 19 flats in the house have been rented out.”

According to the ACC investigation report, “A three-storey flat was used by Jahangir's family. 2 crore 52 lakh 2 thousand 430 taka in cash and bank as movable assets and 1 crore 17 lakh 46 thousand 606 taka in the name of wife, DPS of bank and financial institution has 2 lakh 75 thousand taka, FDR has 1 crore 3 lakh 55 thousand 968 money Wife's bank balance is 27 lakh 97 thousand 455 taka and DPS is 18 lakh 75 thousand taka.

“Besides, there is a car in the name of the wife, the price of which is shown in the affidavit is Tk 22 lakh 80 thousand. His capital in partnership firm is 6 crore 24 lakh 85 thousand taka. Wife's business capital is 73 lakh 38 thousand 510 taka. Jahangir owns a development company called 'AK Real Estate Limited'.”

The complaint against Jahangir ACC Deputy Director Md. Zahid Kalam filed a secret report recommending a public inquiry. It has been asked to collect more detailed information on that report.

Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5 due to the violent mass movement of the students. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited China before the agitation intensified.

Returning from there on July 14, in a press conference, he brought forward the issue of his personal assistant in relation to the Awami League government's measures against corruption.

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) ordered the seizure of the bank accounts of Jahangir, his wife and the institutions related to his interests, although he did not mention the name of the 'Peon' in the press conference. Banks are also directed to send all the information including their account opening forms.

In the directive, if there are any accounts in the name of Jahangi's related persons or institutions, the transactions of those accounts are asked to be suspended for 30 days under Section 23(1) (c) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012.

Jahangir Alam served as personal assistant to the Prime Minister for two consecutive terms. But due to various allegations, he was removed from that duty.

Even when Sheikh Hasina was in the opposition, Jahangir Alam worked as her 'personal staff'. Jahangir used to carry the food and water that was taken from home for Sheikh Hasina on various occasions. Because of that he was known as 'Pani Jahangir'.
