Bangladesh was elected as the president of UNESCO

Bangladesh has been elected as the President of the 43rd General Conference of the World Cultural and Educational Organization UNESCO. Khandkar M. Talha, the country's permanent representative and ambassador to France, was elected to the prestigious post.

This is a historic achievement for Bangladesh, as it is the first time Bangladesh has been elected as the president of the organization after becoming a member of UNESCO.

In the elections held in Paris, the capital of France, Khandaker M. Talha contested with the representative ambassador of Japan, Takehiro Kano. In the final vote, Khandkar Talha got 30 votes, and the Japanese candidate got 27 votes. The representative of Bangladesh won by defeating Japan by a margin of only three votes.

Diplomats stationed in Paris and Dhaka confirmed that Bangladesh, Japan, India and North Korea had announced their candidacy for the presidency of the 43rd General Conference of UNESCO. However, India and North Korea withdrew their candidature last September, leaving Bangladesh and Japan in the running.

This success of Bangladesh in the election is seen as a major achievement of the country in the diplomatic arena. Analysts are describing this victory as another recognition of Bangladesh's image and leadership ability in the international arena.

The 43rd General Conference of UNESCO will begin on October 30 in the historic city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan, at the Silk Road Conference Center. The proceedings of the conference will continue till November 13. This conference will take important decisions on education, culture, science and preservation of heritage worldwide.

Khandkar M Talha is a professional diplomat and BCS (Foreign Cadre) 15th batch officer. He has previously served in the diplomatic missions of Bangladesh in New York, Geneva, Tehran and London. He is appreciated for his long diplomatic experience and efficient role in the international arena.
