Banks have been directed to provide financial assistance to the flood victims


Due to the heavy downpours and heavy rains coming down from the hills, houses, crops and cattle were damaged in various districts of the country including Feni, Noakhali, Chittagong and Comilla. In such a situation, the Central Bank has suggested giving financial assistance from the CSR (Social Responsibility of Banks) sector to the Chief Adviser's Relief and Welfare Fund in the flood-affected areas.

On Sunday (August 25), instructions have been given in this regard from the Sustainable Finance Department of Bangladesh Bank.

According to Bangladesh Bank, recently, due to flood situation in various districts of Bangladesh, including Feni, Noakhali, Chittagong and Comilla, various areas and roads were flooded, and houses, crops and livestock were damaged. On the other hand, the flood situation in Khagrachari district also worsened due to heavy rains. Due to sudden flash floods, heavy rains and inundation, the people of the flood affected areas are living a dehumanized life without shelter.

In this situation, under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, it will be necessary to immediately collect necessary financial assistance and relief materials (food, clothing, clean water, emergency medicine, child care and food items, animal feed, boats) to help the needy people in the areas affected by the recent floods. Therefore, Bangladesh Bank has advised to give financial assistance to the 'Chief Adviser's Relief and Welfare Fund'. The regulatory body said that this order will be effective immediately.

According to the Ministry of Disaster and Relief, the number of flood affected districts is 11 (Feni, Comilla, Chittagong, Khagrachari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Laxmipur and Cox's Bazar). 77 upazilas flooded and 587 affected unions/municipalities.

In 11 districts, a total of 9 lakh 44 thousand 548 families have become waterlogged. The number of affected people is 49 lakh 38 thousand 159 people, 18 people died. Among the dead are 4 in Comilla, 1 in Feni, 5 in Chittagong, 3 in Noakhali, 1 in Brahmanbaria, 1 in Laxmipur and 3 in Cox's Bazar.

A total of 3,527 shelters have been opened to provide shelter to waterlogged/damaged people and a total of 2,84,888 people and 18,21,695 cattle have been sheltered in the shelters, the statement said. A total of 770 medical teams are operational to provide medical care to the victims of 11 districts.

A total of 3 crore 52 lakhs financial assistance has been given to 11 districts. Out of this, 20 thousand 150 metric tons of rice, 15 thousand metric tons of dry food have been distributed. In addition, 35 lakh taka child food and 35 thousand cow food have been distributed.
