Buccaneers Release Recently-Signed Outside Linebacker

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and outside linebacker Randy Gregory have reached an agreement to release Gregory next week, broadcaster Chris Meyers said during Saturday’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Gregory was placed on the Reserve/Did Not Report List as he has failed to report to OTAs, mandatory minicamp, or training camp this offseason.

Gregory signed with the Buccaneers in April on a one-year, $3 million deal. With the agreement, the Buccaneers will get Gregory’s $1.13 million signing bonus back.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles still does not know why Gregory never reported to the team this offseason.

“I’ll never find out, but I wish him the best and we’ll move on from there,” Bowles said, via ESPN’s Jenna Laine. “Can’t miss what you never had.”

Gregory last played with the San Francisco 49ers after he was traded to the team from the Denver Broncos on Oct. 6. The 31-year-old played in 12 games for the 49ers during their Super Bowl run, recording 11 total tackles and 2.5 sacks for San Francisco.

Gregory recently filed a lawsuit in June against the NFL and Denver Broncos which claims Gregory was discriminated against by being fined $532,500 for using medications that contain THC while with the Broncos. Gregory requested to use Dronabinol, which contains THC, during hours outside of work, but the NFL and Broncos denied his request.

The veteran pass rusher was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder in 2021 and post-traumatic stress disorder in 2023. The NFL does not fine players who test positive for THC anymore, but it is still banned and is subject to fines for players who use the substance.

Gregory has previously been suspended multiple times for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy throughout his career. This included Gregory missing the entire 2017 and 2019 seasons, as well as the majority of 2016, due to suspensions for his substance usage.

Before Gregory entered the NFL, he dropped in the 2015 NFL Draft after testing positive for using marijuana during the NFL Scouting Combine. Originally projected to be a first-round pick, Gregory fell to the end of the second round, when he was selected No. 60 overall by the Dallas Cowboys.

Gregory played five seasons with the Cowboys before leaving and signing a five-year, $70 million contract with the Broncos. He appeared in just 10 games with the Broncos in less than a season and a half with the team, before getting traded to the 49ers. Gregory has accumulated 117 total tackles, 22 sacks, and 10 forced fumbles over his career.
