A female festivalgoer at 2024 Burning Man in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert died on Sunday.
Burning Man’s emergency services personnel responded to a report of an unresponsive individual at 11:29 a.m. They immediately attempted life-saving measures but could not save the individual.
The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office deputies later arrived at the scene at 11:37 a.m. and confirmed the death of a female participant.

The female has been identified by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, however, authorities are withholding the participant’s name and age until they notify her next of kin.
Officials are also investigating the death and will determine the cause and manner following the autopsy.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the decedent,” said Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen.
The Burning Man Project acknowledged this news might be difficult for many in the community.
They have made resources available, including 24/7 peer support services provided by Black Rock Rangers at Ranger HQ and outposts. Additionally, the Crisis Support team from Black Rock City’s Emergency Services Department is available around the clock at ESD stations.

What is Burning Man?
Burning Man is an annual event held in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, known for its unique blend of art, community, self-expression, and self-reliance. It is not just a festival but a temporary city that rises in the desert, embracing the principles of inclusion, decommodification, and radical creativity.
The festivalgoers or “burners” build and experience interactive art installations, attend performances, and engage in a variety of communal activities. The event culminates in the burning of a large wooden effigy, known as “the Man,” symbolizing rebirth and renewal.
The festival is unlike any other, emphasizing communal effort and a gift economy over commercial transactions. Participants are encouraged to contribute to the experience through art, performance, and other creative expressions.
This year’s event kicked off on Sunday and will run through September 2.

How many people have died at Burning Man?
Black Rock City, the temporary town for Burning Man, is located in the harsh Black Rock Desert, with limited resources. It is a 1,000 square mile semi-arid region of lava beds and alkali flats with an altitude ranging from 3,000 to 5,931 feet.
According to Burning Man Project’s official website, emergency medical treatment and evacuation are available, but the nearest hospital is 100 miles away. Attendees, who travel long distances by car and plane, face significant risks in this remote and challenging environment.

“During the past ten years, a very few participants have died in traffic accidents while making their way to and from the Black Rock Desert,” the Burning Man Project’s. “This has happened just outside of our gate, and it has happened as far away as a thousand miles.”
Newsweek reached out to the Burning Man Project for an official death toll at the festival, however, they have not yet responded.
Last year, 32-year-old Leon Reece died after being found unresponsive on the festival grounds. Drug intoxication was suspected in his death.

Music Festival Safety Precautions
Festivals range from intimate gatherings to large, multi-stage events featuring diverse music genres, leading to variations in their fanbase.
Each year, reports of drug overdoses, sexual assaults and even deaths are reported at concerts. Between 1996 and 2024, at least 175 people died at events across the U.S. The majority of those killed at festivals are in their late teens or early twenties.
To stay safe from sexual assaults and crowd surges at events, friends should stay in groups, and attendees should remain aware of their surroundings rather than being absorbed in their phones.
As for drug usage, experts recommend buying and testing substances before festivals to reduce risks, as drug use often occurs despite legal concerns.
The Burning Man festival is taking place from the last Sunday in August to the first Monday in September.
