Justice Manik was arrested by the BGB while he was illegally fleeing to India through the Dana border of Kanighat upazila of Sylhet at around 11 pm on August 23. The next day around 4 pm, the police arrested him under Section 54 and brought him to the court of Sylhet Judicial Magistrate-1 Alamgir Hossain. The court ordered to send Justice Manik to jail under Section 54. An agitated mob pelted him with eggs and shoes and physically assaulted him when he appeared in court. At one point his testicles burst. He has been admitted to the ICU of Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
A case has been registered in the Noakhali court against Manik for making objectionable comments about the founder of BNP, former President Ziaur Rahman. In the same complaint on August 22, in the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam, lawyer Md. Ziaul Haque filed another case as the plaintiff. The court directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the complaint.
Chowdhury Manik, who started his career as a High Court lawyer in 1978, became Deputy Attorney General in 1996 during the Awami League government. In 2001, he was made an additional judge of the High Court by the government. But later BNP government came and dropped him.
After Awami League came back to power in 2009, Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik returned to the judge's seat in a judgment of the High Court. In 2013, he was promoted to Judge of Appellate Division.
Before his retirement in 2015, Justice Manik has been in the headlines for his conflict with the then Chief Justice SK Sinha. At that time he also complained to the President against Justice Sinha.
After retirement, he was regularly seen on television talk shows and various social movements. He was always a loud voice for the Awami League government.
