Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Discusses Dak Prescott Contract Status After CeeDee Lamb Deal

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones checked a big box off his to-do list this week when he officially signed star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to a four-year, $136 million deal.

The contract made Lamb the second-highest-paid non quarterback in NFL history, and also ensured quarterback Dak Prescott would have his No. 1 weapon for the entire 2024 season.

It also made Prescott the new hot topic at Cowboys camp.

Prescott is entering the final season of the four-year, $160 million deal he signed with the Cowboys in 2021. He hasn’t held out in search of a new contract, and to this point, it seems like the ball is in Jones’ hands to offer him a new deal.

Jones has been relatively mum on the topic all offseason long. To be fair, there were more urgent matters with Lamb holding out.

Now that Lamb’s back, though, all focus shifts to Prescott. Jones was asked on Wednesday where things stand with the star quarterback now that Lamb has been secured.

“It’ll remain like it’s been,” Jones said, via ESPN.

On Tuesday, Lamb told reporters he wanted to see Jones and the Cowboys lock up their three-time Pro Bowl signal-caller.

“You look at our numbers together, they’re at top of the charts,” Lamb said to reporters. “I have no doubt that they’re going to get a deal done. We all know I want Dak here. Jerry wants Dak here, too. Let’s just get this under control, kill the speculations.”

Prescott has developed into one of the league’s best quarterbacks since being selected in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Across eight seasons, Prescott has a career record of 73-41, and had his best season in 2023 when he completed a league-best 410 passes for 4,516 yards and a league-high 36 touchdowns to just nine interceptions. Prescott finished second in MVP voting, fifth in Offensive Player of the Year voting, and on the All-Pro Second-Team.

Prescott and the Cowboys have had ongoing talks all offseason long, and Jones said there’s no indication those discussions would halt at the start of the season. On Wednesday, Jones had nothing but praise for the 31-year-old quarterback.

“I’m such a fan of Dak’s and appreciate all of the great things that we all know that is there,” Jones said. “And I appreciate his work ethic more than anything out here. I can’t tell you how proud I am that we’ve got him this year to start this campaign.”

Jones also made it known that the lack of traction on a contract has less to do with Prescott, and more to do with the current situation in Dallas.

“When you look at a situation, you’ve got also got to weigh, ‘OK, what are the consequences of the other side of the coin?’ And so Dak’s situation right now for me, from my mirror, has more to do with our situation than it does with the merits of Dak Prescott being the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.”

If the Cowboys and Prescott don’t reach an extension, Dallas would have no quarterbacks under contract next season. Prescott, Trey Lance, and Cooper Rush are all set to hit free agency next offseason.
