Critical Media Personality Calls Red Sox Trade of Mookie Betts Worst in 100 Years

Mookie Betts hasn’t missed a beat since he returned from a two-month stint on the injured list with a fractured hand on Monday.

The Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder homered in his first game back against the Milwaukee Brewers and made a highlight-reel diving catch on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

He has also done all of this while playing right field, a position he won six Gold Gloves in before moving to the infield last season.

It was moments like the two mentioned that had FOX Sports radio personality Colin Cowherd scratching his head. Could this be one of the worst trades in baseball history?

“The two worst trades in major league baseball history both belong to the Red Sox,” Cowherd said. “They gave up Babe Ruth, and they gave up Mookie Betts.

“You think I’m being hyperbolic here, Mookie Betts had been gone for two months. The kid’s incredible. When he was in his prime, the Red Sox were like, ‘We’re going to move him to the Dodgers.’ Yeah, you’ll need a search party for the guys they got for him because only one player still remains with the Red Sox.”

In his first seven games since being activated off the IL, Betts is 10-for-28 with five multi-hit games. He has launched two home runs and one double while driving in four runs and scoring five.

Betts is now batting .309 on the season with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs.

When the Boston Red Sox traded Betts to the Dodgers in Feb. 2020, he was entering the final year of his contract. Boston and Betts failed to reach a long-term agreement and instead of letting him go to free agency, the Red Sox opted to trade him.

Betts and Los Angeles agreed to a 12-year, $365 million deal in July 2020 and the trajectory of the two teams hasn’t been the same since.

The Dodgers went on to win the World Series in 2020 while the Red Sox have been mediocre at best. Since the trade, Boston ranks 17th in winning percentage, 17th in run differential, and 18th in home run differential.

Call it coincidence or call it irony but regardless, the Betts trade came exactly 100 offseasons after the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. That trade began the 86-year drought without a World Series.

Will the trade of Betts bring another generational drought to the Red Sox?
