Dale Earnhardt Jr. Backs RCR’s Fight Against NASCAR’s Eye-Watering Penalty

Following the Cup Series race at Richmond, where Austin Dillon clinched an unexpected win after hitting rivals Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano in the final corner, NASCAR’s subsequent reaction has sparked questions from stakeholders. The racing organization stripped Dillon’s No.3 team, part of Richard Childress Racing, of its automatic playoff spot, citing the aggressive move that led to his win.

The decision was met with immediate disappointment from RCR, prompting them to launch an appeal against NASCAR’s ruling.

However, their efforts hit a roadblock when the National Motorsports Appeals Panel upheld the original penalty. Undeterred, RCR took their case to a higher level, filing a further appeal to challenge the panel’s decision.

Amidst this contentious backdrop, racing icon Dale Earnhardt Jr. has voiced his support for RCR’s persistent efforts to overturn the penalty. Earnhardt Jr., known for his deep experience in the sport, offered his take on the situation.

“I think that Austin and his team will put forth a great argument. I don’t think that they’re wasting their time, I don’t think that what they’re going to bring to the table and show to the board is silly,” he stated.

Earnhardt’s remarks double down on his belief that RCR isn’t just fighting a losing battle out of stubbornness but is driven by a genuine conviction in their cause.

“I honestly feel like that they believe what they’re going to tell them. Austin and his team, they’re not sitting here with these stats going, ‘Yeah look at this man, this is fine.’

“They’re not lying, they’re not trying to be nefarious or anything.

“They truly believe that they didn’t do this and they believe they got the data to show,” he explained.

Despite his support for RCR’s right to appeal, Earnhardt Jr. harbors reservations about the likelihood of their success:

“That’s why I’m okay with them appealing, I just don’t believe that they’ll win it. The one thing about this is it’s such a judgment call whereas in most appeals it’s a technical part, an inspection process, a flaw somewhere that a team has stumbled upon intentionally or unintentionally in the processes of technical inspection pre or post-race.”

The outcome of this appeal will highly impact RCR’s season while also setting a significant precedent for how judgment calls are debated in the future of competitive stock car racing.
