It can be seen on the surface, the students of Dhaka University left for the secretariat after the news of the detention of Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, two coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement. At this time Ansar members chased the students. At this time, Ansar members beat some people with sticks. Later, when the students threw brickbats, the Ansar members also retreated.

Earlier, when Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam announced the detention in their Facebook post at around 8:30 pm, the angry students started gathering at the foot of the Raju sculpture. Later at 9 pm they started their journey towards the Secretariat.

Motasim Billah Mahfuz, coordinator of anti-discrimination student movement, wrote in a Facebook post, Hasnat and Sargis Bhai, along with adviser Nahid Bhai, were blocked in the secretariat by some misguided Ansar members and the ghosts of Chhatra League. We will all march to the Secretariat and bring them free. Join everyone, make the matter known to everyone, it is very important.

When the students regrouped and gave chase, the Ansar members fled from the secretariat premises. The coordinators who were stuck in the secretariat till the last news were trying to get out.
