Disney will no longer seek to block a widower’s wrongful death lawsuit from heading to court, the company has said following backlash.

Jeffrey Piccolo’s $50,000 suit alleged his wife, Kanokporn Tangsuan, died from an allergic reaction to a resort restaurant meal in October 2023. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts argued his Disney+ contract means any dispute cannot go to court, and asked for arbitration—often a more cost-effective route for companies.

In a reversal, Disney told Newsweek on Monday it had now “decided to waive our right to arbitration and have the matter proceed in court.”

The statement added: “At Disney, we strive to put humanity above all other considerations. With such unique circumstances as the ones in this case, we believe this situation warrants a sensitive approach to expedite a resolution for the family who have experienced such a painful loss.”
