The FBI is investigating a potential sabotage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago after maggots were allegedly slipped into the hotel breakfast being served to delegates.
Law enforcement agencies suggest activists likely brought the maggots into the hotel to make a statement, while city officials released a statement addressing the delegate breakfast dilemma.
“Multiple unknown female offenders are alleged to have entered a building (200 block of North Columbus Drive) and began placing unknown objects onto tables containing food. The offenders are believed to have then left the area. One victim was treated and released on-scene. Along with CPD, FBI-Chicago is assisting in the investigation. No further information is available at this time.”

It’s unclear if the contamination was found before any delegates ate the food.
Delegates expressed concern over the maggot incident while Chicago police officers and Illinois state troopers gathered in the lobby of the Fairmont Hotel near the meeting rooms.
“They protected us, of course, and turned it around in minutes,” said Indiana delegate Tracy Boyd, who is at the convention representing the Indianapolis region. She said her group was notified that breakfast service would be briefly delayed due to the incident.
“I really do want to give a shout-out to the hotel staff and leadership,” Boyd said to WGN Investigates.
Newsweek reached out to the Chicago Police Department; however, they have not yet responded.
The Fairmont Hotel is hosting Democratic delegates from Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Missouri, and South Dakota.
The hotel told Newsweek the safety, security and well-being of our guests and staff are our top priorities.
“We can confirm that a group of individuals caused a disruption at a DNC-related breakfast event at our hotel this morning,” Fairmont Chicago spokesperson Haley Robles told Newsweek. We are grateful for the swift response of law enforcement.”
“Our team acted immediately to clean and sanitize the area, ensuring that the event could continue without further incident. We maintain the highest standards of food safety and cleanliness throughout our property and have strict protocols in place to handle any disruptions.”
Maggot Mayhem
This isn’t the first time a maggot incident has occurred.
A video showing maggots dumped around the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C., where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stayed during his U.S. trip last month, went viral on social media.

In a statement to Newsweek, the Watergate Hotel said via email: “We are aware of the social media video circulating on multiple platforms involving The Watergate Hotel and the unfortunate incident that occurred at the property yesterday.”
People on social media said the incident was caused by pro-Palestinian protesters. But those reports have not been confirmed. Netanyahu’s trip occurred amidst Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, which began after Hamas launched an attack on the Middle Eastern country on October 7, 2023.
What If You Eat a Maggot?
Consuming maggots or food contaminated with maggots can lead to bacterial poisoning. Foods infested with maggots are generally unsafe to eat, particularly if the larvae have been exposed to feces.
Maggots, the larval stage of flies, are soft, legless, and typically white or pale yellow. They breed on garbage or rotting organic material. After several developmental stages, maggots transform into adult flies.
