Ahead of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) starting Monday, Democrats have released their party platform in a 92-page document outlining their policy priorities in several key areas.
The platform was written before President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and Vice President Kamala Harris became the presumptive nominee, and so heavily features Biden’s name and policies—even where they differ from policies Harris has since expressed support for.
Democrats will vote on the platform Monday evening, and it is largely expected to pass as it is written.

Economy
On the economy, the party sharply contrasts Biden’s approach to Trump’s.
“This election is a choice between two very different economic visions for America: Donald Trump, who sees the world from his country club at Mar-a-Lago; and Joe Biden, who sees it from kitchen tables in Scranton like the one he grew up around,” the document says.
The document highlights the Biden-Harris administration’s achievements, including their efforts to rebuild the economy following the pandemic.
Democrats outlined their priorities, including continuing to invest in infrastructure and manufacturing, moves they say have already contributed to creating hundreds of thousands of jobs.
They also vow to expand tax credits for working people and families with children, while ensuring that “the ultra-wealthy and big corporations finally start paying their fair share.”
Abortion
The party pledges to restore abortion rights and reinstate Roe v Wade if Democrats win the House and the Senate.
The document addresses the overturning of Roe v Wade, which enshrined federal abortion rights, by a majority conservative Supreme Court, of which three of the nine justices had been appointed by Trump.
The party directly blames Trump for the strict abortion bans that have since been implemented in 20 states, and warns that he will ban abortion nationwide if reelected.
It says that the bans are dangerous and “put the health and lives of women in jeopardy, force women to travel hundreds of miles for care, and threaten to criminalize doctors for providing the health care that their patients need and that they are trained to provide.”
Israel-Gaza
One of the most contentious policy areas for Democrats is Israel’s war in Gaza.
The policy document features a whole section dedicated to the conflict, in which it reiterates the party’s support of Israel in the fight against Hamas and notes that Israel’s right to defend itself is “ironclad.”
It also outlines the party’s support of “an immediate and lasting ceasefire deal,” which includes the return of all hostages and addresses “the displacement and death of so many innocent people in Gaza.”
The ultimate goal, per the document, is a “negotiated two-state solution that ensures Israel’s future as a Jewish and democratic state with recognized borders and upholds the right of Palestinians to live in freedom and security in a viable state of their own.”
Biden’s continued support of Israel has been met with criticism by voters, particularly young people and Arab Americans.
Pro-Palestinian groups are planning to protest the party’s policies outside the convention this week, with tens of thousands of protesters expected to attend.
The anti-Trump party
The party platform document extensively talks about Trump – mentioning his name 150 times in the 92-page document.
Democrats contrasted their party with Trump’s approach in every policy area, and sought to frame him as a threat to democracy.
“Trump refuses to defend core tenets of our democracy: the Constitution, the rule of law, our system of checks and balances,” the document says in a section titled “Strengthening Democracy, Protecting Freedoms, & Advancing Equity.”
It talks about his refusal to accept his 2020 election loss and the January 6 attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters.
“We know how Trump will weaken our democracy if he gets another term. He has promised to be a dictator on “Day One”,” the document says.
“He has vowed to weaponize our government to go after his enemies and benefit his allies. He has plans to fire dedicated, nonpolitical civil servants and replace them with loyalists who will do his bidding; and he has promised to exert presidential authority over what have long been independent agencies. And to silence his critics, he suggested the “termination” of our Constitution. The stakes in this election for the soul of our nation are profound.”
Climate change
The document highlights climate change as a critical and pressing issue of our times.
It says that the Biden administration had been delivering on “the most aggressive climate agenda in history,” such as by creating clean energy jobs, and leading to America producing more energy than ever in its history.
They say these policies are lowering energy costs, creating good-paying jobs, revitalizing local economies, and reducing pollution.
The party pledges to continue these investments into clean energy, and to “stand up to Big Oil,” such as by eliminating billions of dollars of oil and gas subsidies.
They also say that it is critical to make American communities more resilient to climate change and extreme weather.
