Interim government chief advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has proposed the formation of a high-level committee between Bangladesh and India on flood control so that the two countries can jointly deal with severe flood situations.

He made this proposal to the Government of India during a courtesy meeting with Principal Adviser to Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma at Rashtriya Guest House Yamuna on Thursday (August 22).

In the evening, the press secretary of the Chief Adviser Shafiqul Alam said in a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy, 'Dr. Yunus said, the kind of flag meeting we have between the border guarding forces of Bangladesh and India, if such a high-level committee can be made, it will meet when there is a severe flood situation and both countries will jointly work to deal with the flood situation.

The Chief Adviser said, 'Since Bangladesh and India are situated cross-border and there are many trans-boundary rivers, such initiatives will help us in dealing with situations like floods.'

In a meeting with the Indian High Commissioner. Yunus expressed hope that the unresolved issue of water sharing of transboundary rivers would be resolved soon. The Nobel Peace Prize winning economist said that the personal relationship with India is very good. Yunus emphasized on strengthening BIMSTEC and SAARC.

He said, 'We have to make arrangements so that the youth of SAARC countries can work together for their own prosperity.'

In the meeting, Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma expressed interest in working closely with Bangladesh, saying, 'I strongly want to see a strong and prosperous Bangladesh and believe in friendly relations between the people of both countries.'

The Indian High Commissioner said, 'The flood in Tripura is unprecedented. About 50,000 people have been displaced there. The amount of water in Tripura was so high that it overflowed and entered Bangladesh.' Apart from this, Prannoy Verma expressed concern about the security of Indian embassy and embassy officials in Bangladesh.
