A fiery crash dramatically marked the conclusion of the second stage of the Focused Health 250 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, as a collision between Sam Mayer and Taylor Gray left Mayer’s Chevrolet Camaro in flames.
The NASCAR Xfinity race took an unexpected turn when Mayer, aiming to improve his playoff starting position, misjudged a move that set off a chain reaction.
Racing seventh, Mayer attempted to ascend the track believing he had clearance, leading to a collision with the unaware Gray. Gray’s vehicle was thrust into the wall, an impact that caused Mayer’s car to catch fire.
Fortunately, Mayer quickly exited his flaming vehicle unscathed. Over the radio, he took responsibility for the crash, stating, “Sorry guys. I was trying to be aggressive; either it wasn’t good, or the No. 19 was being more aggressive. Call that on me, sorry.”
Despite the crash, Mayer emerged from the infield care center with an optimistic perspective. Speaking to Fox Sports’s Bob Pockrass, he commented, as quoted by Road and Track:
“You’re always trying to push it to the limit to make moves like that, especially with 15 to go in the stage; you’re pushing it all you’ve got.

“I’ve got to tell you this is some of the most fun I’ve had at this racetrack, especially this style of racing. It was a blast. I was having a lot of fun making moves out there, rolling the bottom. It certainly helps when your car is probably the best one in the field.
However, the incident does have implications beyond the immediate turmoil on the track. Mayer, in his final season with JR Motorsports and the No. 1 team, is set to join the restructured Haas Factory team next year.
Austin Hill took the victory of the dramatic Focused Health 250 followed by Parker Kligerman and AJ Allmendinger.
