DU students injured in army baton charge

On Tuesday night, two separate incidents of common people clashed with students of Dhaka University. It was reported that several people were injured.

Students were injured in army lathi charge due to clashes with locals. Dhaka University's new proctor Saifuddin Ahmed spoke to BBC Bangla about this incident in Azimpur, Dhaka.

He said, “From the information I have, the vendors who live on the roadside have had an argument with the students. It was on that basis that the students clashed with the shopkeepers there and then the shopkeepers apparently called the army's mobile patrol team. The army then lathi-charged the two parties to drive them away.

“It was done by the soldiers, not the officers. When I involved Lt Col Nahid there, he came and managed the matter nicely…but at some point they (soldiers) took two students in.”

He said that the two people who picked them up were “massively killed”. “Those two were badly injured. This happened without the knowledge of the officers.”

The two injured students were initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Later they were sent to CMH in the presence of the University Vice-Chancellor at 3 am.

Doctors at CMH said that there is no danger for now. “But they need rest now. The next six hours will tell if any other treatment is needed. Especially in their lower part…there are marks of injuries.”

Islam said that these two students are students of Mohsin Hall. However, although the number of seriously injured are two, at least 20 people have been injured due to the army's baton charge, several students of the university said.

The army is forming an inquiry committee to investigate the incident. “They will look at this issue very seriously. Since they promised, we did not go to the case.”
