McLaren driver Lando Norris not only clinched victory at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix but did so with a commanding lead over local favorite Max Verstappen. Norris secured a dominant first-place finish, leaving the reigning champion trailing by approximately 20 seconds.
Norris initially lost the lead to Verstappen, but the tables turned quickly. Despite a strong start, Verstappen faced persistent issues with his car as the driver struggled with understeer and poor driveability.
By lap 18, Norris capitalized on these problems, overtaking Verstappen and beginning his stint at the front of the pack. The following laps saw Norris progressively building his lead, with Verstappen unable to close the growing gap.
Verstappen’s performance at his home Grand Prix was undeniably below expectations. His early lead gave fans hope, but as the race progressed, the ongoing difficulties with the RB20 shone through.

As the race neared its end, the final standings saw Norris first, followed by Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Rounding off the top ten were McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso.
The Dutch Grand Prix marks Norris’s second victory of the season and his career after his maiden win in Miami.
Speaking to the media after the race, Norris explained that he thought Verstappen would have been faster. He commented:
“Saturday is always a good indication of what you are able to do and we were very quick yesterday so we had high hopes. The car has been lovely to drive.
“I thought Max would be quicker that he was. It seemed like he was the outlier as he dropped all the way back to the Ferraris, which was a surprise.”
In a separate post-race interview he reflected on his win, stating:
“It feels amazing. I wouldn’t say a perfect race because of lap one again, but it was still beautiful. The pace was strong, the car was unbelievable.
“I could push and get past Max. It was a straightforward race. Tough but enjoyable.
“From quite early on, from lap six or seven, I expected Max to start pushing and open up a gap and he never did.
“From that point I felt we were in the fight. He seemed to keep dropping off and my pace was getting better.
“I could get comfortable and push.”
