F1 Rumor: Adrian Newey’s New Team Being Confirmed Ahead Of Azerbaijan – What We Know

Adrian Newey, one of Formula One’s most illustrious engineers, is rumored to join Aston Martin, with an official announcement expected before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix next week.

The Athletic reports that the 65-year-old will be stepping into a new role following his departure from Red Bull in the spring of 2025, marking a significant transition from within the paddock.

Newey, whose expertise has led to 12 drivers’ championships and 13 constructors’ titles over a career spanning more than three decades, decided earlier this year to leave Red Bull after spending 19 years with the team.

His decision to take a brief hiatus before embarking on this new venture has had the paddock buzzing, with several teams vying for his formidable talent. It now appears Aston Martin has secured his services, a move that could reshape a struggling team.

Teams such as Ferrari, Williams, and McLaren were also reportedly interested in acquiring Newey’s expertise. However, it seems Aston Martin had the right mix of ambition and resources to close the deal. As Lawrence Stroll’s ownership continues to infuse the team with high-profile managerial and technical minds, the Silverstone team is positioning itself as a serious contender, especially as the regulations change in 2026.

Since taking over the team, Stroll has made several strategic hires, including multiple world champions Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, as well as top technical figures from powerhouse teams. Andy Cowell, the former Mercedes engine chief, now serves as group CEO, while former Ferrari technical director Enrico Cardile has stepped into the role of chief technical officer.

These changes, coupled with the investment in a state-of-the-art factory at Silverstone, show a serious level of dedication to rising to the front of the grid.

“Formula One these days is so broad, it is not like you have to make huge changes,” commented team principal Mike Krack. “Someone like that [Newey], you have to make any kind of effort to integrate and adjust your structure to get the best out of it.”

Historically, Newey has been instrumental in various teams’ successes, having worked with Williams, McLaren, and most recently Red Bull. His engineering genius has often been the differentiating factor in highly competitive seasons.

“Not working with Alonso was one of his big F1 career regrets,” Newey once admitted.

Following his announcement to leave Red Bull, Newey has gradually stepped away from day-to-day duties but continued contributing to the design and development of the Red Bull RB17 hypercar. He relished unveiling the hypercar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.

“I think there was a time where there was a team that had seven technical directors in the past, so I think we are very far from that,” Krack said.

This rumored change signifies not just a pivotal moment for Newey but also for Aston Martin as they aim to reclaim their place on the podium once again.
