Interim government chief advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus mentioned that the flood control is the highest priority of the government and urged the private institutions and citizens to work together with the government to control the flood.
He made this call in a meeting with representatives of non-governmental development organizations (NGOs) regarding the flood situation. On Saturday, the NGO representatives held a meeting with the Chief Adviser at the Rashtriya Guest House Yamuna. Officials of 44 NGOs working in coastal and disaster areas participated in the meeting.
Later, Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam gave this information.
Shafiqul Alam said, βThe chief adviser said that the government is giving the highest priority to deal with floods at the moment. We must deal with this situation. Everyone should come forward to fulfill this responsibility.'
Dr. Yunus emphasized on increasing the coordination in the field of rescue operations and relief distribution, and said, 'Government, NGOs and those who are working on flood control should increase coordination. If possible, the flood control work should be coordinated at the district level as well.'
The Chief Adviser said that crores of people are coming forward with flood rescue operations and relief. It is important to ensure proper utilization of their noble enthusiasm. That's why we all have to work shoulder to shoulder.
Continuous heavy rains and water coming down from India have hit the country with worst floods in memory. 11 districts have been affected by floods. Millions of people have been trapped in water due to severe floods.
In the meeting, Muhammad Yunus urged all parties to work together to deal with the overall situation, including post-flood food and health risks, stating that more work needs to be done after the flood waters recede.
Nobel Peace Prize winning economist Dr. Yunus said, 'Young people have created great opportunities for us. Make the most of this opportunity quickly.'
The head of government also said that not only attention should be given to fighting floods, but also how to keep the country flood-free.
