Food inflation increased further


Due to increase in the price of food products, inflation has increased from 0.15 percent to 9.89 percent in the recently concluded May of this year. Last April, this rate of inflation was 9.74 percent. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) released the data on Monday (June 3).

According to the latest BBS figures, food inflation rose sharply in May despite a decline in non-food inflation. Food inflation rose to 10.76 percent, while non-food inflation rose to 9.19 percent.

Urban areas have had a higher inflationary impact than rural areas. Inflation is 9.99 percent in urban areas and 9.72 percent in rural areas.

In March, food inflation in urban areas was 10.86 percent, non-food inflation was 9.03 percent and in rural areas food inflation was 10.73 percent and non-food inflation was 9.31 percent.

The average inflation rate in 2022-23 was 9.02 percent. This is much higher than the average of six percent in recent years.
