Former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi arrested

Former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has been arrested by RAB. He was arrested from the house of Salauddin Ahmed, the leader of M&J Group, on road number 123 of Gulshan-1 at around 1:30 pm on Wednesday.

RAB's legal and media wing confirmed the matter in a message sent to the media.

According to RAB, Tipu Munshi has been arrested in the case filed in connection with the murder of gold worker Muslim Uddin Milan who was shot dead during the anti-discrimination student movement. He will be handed over to the police after preliminary interrogation.

On August 5, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned in the face of the Non-Cooperation Movement and fled to India. The next day, on August 6, she lost her position as a Member of Parliament after the President dissolved Parliament.

A murder case has been filed against him in Gazipur and Rangpur in connection with the killing of students and workers in the anti-discrimination student movement.

On August 22, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of Bangladesh Bank seized the bank accounts of Tipu Munshi, his wife Irene Malbika Munshi, daughter Tania Ananya Munshi and Trisha Munshi. At the same time, bank account transactions of their owned businesses have been suspended.

Tipu Munshi is a former Member of Parliament from Rangpur-4 (Pirgacha-Kaunia) Constituency. He also served as Commerce Minister from 2019 to 2023. He was excluded from the new ministership in 2024 due to failure to control these things even after the living conditions of the common people became unbearable due to the unsustainable market prices of daily commodities and high inflation. Apart from the failure to control the market, Tipu commented that 'we cannot deal with the syndicate', many blamed this 'surrender' to the daily commodity syndicate as the main reason for his removal from the post of minister.
