Former student leader Shafi Ahmed passed away


Shafi Ahmed, one of the student leaders of the anti-dictatorship movement of the 90s, is no more. He died of a heart attack on Monday evening. He is survived by his wife and two sons. He was 62 years old.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal Jasad Central Joint General Secretary Abdullahil Qayyum confirmed his death to the media.

He said that Shafi Ahmed suffered a heart attack in his sleep around 7:30 this evening. Later he was taken to a hospital in Uttara. Later, the doctor declared the former student leader dead. Shafi Ahmed completed his post graduation from the Law Department of Dhaka University. Shafi Ahmed, a student leader and one of the organizers of the anti-dictatorship movement in the 80s of the last century, joined Awami League from Jasad and served as the central deputy secretary. He was the leader of the sub-committee on liberation war of Awami League.

Shafi was nominated for Netrakona-4 seat in the canceled election of 2007. But as Seva was not elected, he was not voted again. He became an independent candidate in the last 12th parliamentary election held in January 2024. However, the nomination paper was cancelled.

Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep grief over the death of Shafi Ahmed. General Secretary of Awami League Obaidul Quader expressed further condolences.
