A young woman (18) who came to Manpura upazila of Bhola with her boyfriend for marriage was 'gang-raped'. It was alleged that her boyfriend was raped by holding her in an embankment of the upazila last Thursday night.
After talking to the police, local people and the victim, it is said that the girl's house is in Sunamganj district. Her lover's house is in a village of Manpura upazila. Both of them work in a factory in Chittagong. The young woman came to Manpura last Thursday with her boyfriend to collect necessary documents as part of family preparations for marriage.
According to local sources, the girl was kept by her boyfriend at her grandmother's house. When the matter came to light, an influential local gang held them hostage and demanded a ransom of two lakh rupees on the pretext of extramarital affairs. It is alleged that if the money is not paid, they were handed over to the police and threatened with death. At one stage, the gang allowed them to leave the area in exchange of Rs 50,000. Despite the resistance of the local people, they were forcibly taken out of the house and told to be sent to Chittagong in a night launch.
The young victim said, 'They brought us to the Taltali embankment saying that we would be given lunch. The navy is coming here and there, throwing torch light, threatening to come down below the embankment. After dropping me down the embankment, my boyfriend started beating me. Later he was tied to a tree. Then two or three people grabbed my face and raped me. I don't know their names. But I can recognize it when I see it.'
The young woman's boyfriend said that local Ghiyasuddin, Alamgir Majhi, Idris Majhi, Al-Amin and Maqsud demanded the contribution from them on Thursday. Later, Idris, Al-Amin and Maqsood brought them to the launch pad. But instead of taking him to the launch ghat, he took him to the deserted embankment of Taltali area and first beat him severely. Later, he was detained and gang-raped by his lover. At one point they fled leaving the lover bloodied and unconscious. Later he was rescued with the help of local people.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Manpura Police Station. Farid said the police visited the spot soon after receiving the information and rescued the young victim. Besides sending him to Bhola Sadar Hospital for medical examination, the case is being prepared. Several teams of police have already launched an operation to arrest the people involved in the incident.
