Gomti river is overflowing, red alert advised

Comilla's Gomti river has gradually swelled due to continuous rains and water flowing from India. Already, about 4,000 hectares of cropland has been submerged in water. Rain and runoff are increasing steadily. Local residents are afraid that they will soon be affected by severe floods.

Water is flowing over the danger zone. The Water Development Board has asked the district administration to issue a red alert in case of any accident. As of 10am on Thursday (August 22), water was flowing 71cm above the boundary line.

Water Development Board (PUBO) Comilla Executive Engineer Khan Mohammad Waliuzzaman confirmed this information and said that the water may rise further. The army, district administration, poubo, upazila administration, police, public representatives, various voluntary organizations, students and local residents are working to protect the dam. Water levels may rise further. Water has been entering the locality since Wednesday through several vulnerable parts of the dam. As soon as we get such news, we are trying to handle the situation with the help of locals.

Red Alater's advice

Engineer Khan Mohammad Waliuzzaman also said, I have informed the district administration to issue a red alert. Because accidents can happen at any time. The water level in the river is continuously rising.

Comilla District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Mohammad Abed Ali said that 36 shelters have been opened in Comilla district till Thursday morning. Dry food is being distributed among the flood victims. He said that further measures will be taken according to the situation.

On the other hand, due to continuous rains and mountain landslides, the water level of Dakatiya and Kankari rivers has risen and most of the areas including Chouddagram, Nangalkot Upazila of Comilla have been swept away along with the crop lands and livestock farms, and the traffic system has been severely hampered.
