A senior official of the Palestinian organization Hamas said that they will not accept the proposal of the ceasefire agreement. Because it won't end the Gaza war entirely. The official alleged that Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu was personally blocking the deal.
Mediators from Qatar, Egypt and the United States met with a delegation of Hamas in Cairo on Saturday (May 4). During this time they heard from Hamas about its response to the cease-fire proposal.
The resolution calls for a 40-day ceasefire and the release of hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners. But the senior Hamas official said on Saturday night that their group would not agree to this proposal under any circumstances. Because it does not include a complete end to the war in Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from there.
The Hamas official, who did not want to be named, also said that Israel only wants to ensure the release of the hostages through the agreement without ending the Gaza war.
He alleged that Netanyahu was only hindering efforts to reach an agreement due to personal interests.
It should be noted that before this there were talks on establishing a ceasefire in Gaza. But it stopped at some point. Because Hamas demands a permanent cease-fire, Netanyahu has repeatedly expressed his determination to launch an operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Rafah is currently a refuge for displaced Palestinians.
According to a senior Hamas source closely connected to the talks, the talks will resume on Sunday.
On October 7 last year, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel. On the same day, Israel launched a retaliatory counter-attack on Gaza. 34,654 Palestinian civilians have been killed so far in the ongoing attacks. Most of them are women and children.
