Today is Monday (August 26) the birthday of Lord Krishna and auspicious Janmashtami. Traditionalists of the country will celebrate the Janmashtami festival today with religious solemnity and joy. Various socio-cultural and religious organizations including Bangladesh Puja Celebration Parishad, Metropolitan Universal Puja Committee, International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISCON) have taken various programs on this occasion.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was born on the eighth tithi of Shuklapaksha in the month of Bhadra. According to Sanatana religionists, when brute forces rose to devour justice, truth and beauty, Lord Krishna of the Mahavatar appeared to subdue that force and establish the welfare and justice of mankind. Their further belief is that this is how God descends to man through the ages to subdue the evil and establish the true and the beautiful.
Today is a public holiday on the occasion of Janmashtami. Special programs will be broadcast on private satellite channels including Bangladesh Betar and BTV.
