Heavy rains kill 18 in Oman, floods in UAE


Heavy rains have killed at least 18 people in the Gulf nation of Oman. In addition, flash floods have also occurred in the United Arab Emirates. Al Jazeera reported this information in a report on Tuesday (April 16).

Qatar-based media reported that heavy rains and flash floods have virtually inundated parts of the Gulf region. At least 18 people have been killed in Oman.

Omani officials said nine of the dead were school students. Last Sunday in Samad A'shan their car along with the driver drowned in the flood water.

According to the country's state media, police and soldiers have been deployed in the worst-hit Ash Sharqiyah Uttar Pradesh to evacuate citizens from flood-hit areas.

Meanwhile, heavy rains also occurred in the neighboring United Arab Emirates on Tuesday. It flooded parts of the country's main highways and left many users stranded on roads across Dubai.

Heavy rains also disrupted operations at the Dubai International Airport. Also, schools have been declared closed in the entire United Arab Emirates.

Government employees in the UAE have been ordered to work from home. Tanker trucks are being used to move the water. Dubai received 30 mm of rain on Tuesday morning.

Dubai-based media outlet Khaleej Times reported that on Tuesday local time, the United Arab Emirates experienced a 75-year record rainfall. Which is the highest since 1949.

Rainfall was also reported in Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
