The High Court has ordered the concerned authorities of the government to exhume the body of one-time influential BNP leader Harish Chowdhury from the grave and conduct DNA tests on the body to confirm his identity.
On Thursday (September 5), Deputy Attorney General Redwan Ahmed Ranjib said, the High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Muhammad Mahbub ul Islam gave the order in view of the writ petition of Harish Chowdhury's daughter Barrister Samira Tanjim Chowdhury.
Incidentally, Harish Chowdhury, one of the accused in the August 21, 2004 grenade attack case, was staying at his home in Kanighat, Sylhet after the declaration of emergency in 2007. During the operation of the joint forces, on January 29 of that year, he was reported to have left for India through the Jakiganj border in Sylhet. Since then Harish Chowdhury's position was not certain. The court sentenced Harish Chowdhury to life imprisonment on October 10, 2018 in the August 21 grenade attack case. On October 29 of that year, he was sentenced to 7 years in prison and fined Tk 10 lakh in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. He was also an accused in the murder case of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria.
