Jamaat's application for revival of appeal to get back registration

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has applied to revive the case in the Appellate Division to regain its registration as a political party.

On Sunday (September 1), Jamaat's lawyer Mohammad Shishir filed this application in the Appellate Division.

He said, after the appeal was dismissed as 'dismissal for default', an application has been made to the Chamber Court of the Supreme Court to revive it.

On August 1, 2013, the High Court deregistered Jamaat-e-Islami and declared it illegal. Later, on December 7, 2018, the Election Commission also declared Jamaat-e-Islami invalid. When Jamaat appealed against the High Court verdict, in November 2023, the Appellate Division headed by then Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan dismissed the appeal as β€œdismissal for default”.

Jamaat's lawyer. Matiur Rahman Akand said, against the dismissal of the Appellate Division, according to the law, a revived (restore) application must be made within one month. If the application is not filed within one month, a fresh application can be made by mentioning the reason. Jamaat has filed a plea with that explanation and the court is expected to accept their plea.

On the other hand, on August 28, the Ministry of Home Affairs revoked the notification banning Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir. The new notification says that all its affiliates, including Jamaat and Islami Chhatrashibir, are not involved in terrorism or violence. Therefore, by virtue of section 18 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, the earlier ban was repealed.
