Jamaat's application to the Appellate Division to get back the registration

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has applied to revive the dismissed appeal in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court to get back its canceled registration as a political party. The party's lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir said that the application was made in the Appellate Division Chamber Court on Sunday (September 1).

He said, an application has been made to the Appellate Division Chamber Court to revive (restore) the appeal dismissed as 'dismissal for default'.

Disposing of a writ petition, on August 1, 2013, the High Court ruled that the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami was canceled and declared illegal. Then on December 7, 2018, the Election Commission (EC) issued a notification canceling the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. Later, Jamaat-e-Islami appealed against the verdict in the High Court. However, as the main lawyer of Jamaat was not present at the hearing of the appeal against the High Court's verdict, the six-judge appellate division led by the then Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan ordered the dismissal of the appeal as 'dismissal for default'. As a result, the judgment given by the High Court declaring the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party illegal is upheld.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina's government banned Jamaat-e-Islami and Islamic student camps on August 1 during the anti-discrimination student movement. Under Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification banning Jamaat, student camps and their other organizations. However, on August 28, a notification was issued canceling the decision to ban Jamaat-e-Islami and Islamic student camps.
