The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has announced the recall of approximately 6,000 pounds of ready-to-eat jerky products.
Hickory Hollow Jerky, an Alabama-based and veteran-owned business, produced products without required federal inspection.
The beef and bacon jerky products were produced on various dates between January and August of 20224.
Ownership of Hickory Hollow Jerky changed hands on June 11, 2024. The recalled products were made by the two different owners of the business, neither of whom had the products inspected.

The products were shipped to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Oklahoma, as well through online sales nationwide.
The recalled products bear the establishment number ‘EST. NO. 34550’ and ten flavors of jerky have been impacted, including: Jamaican Jerked, Original, Hot Shot, Peppered, Jalapeno Original, Peppered, Sweet Heat BBQ, Macho Nacho, Honey Mustard Bacon Jerky, Honey Original and Teriyaki.
The issue was discovered during routine FSIS surveillance activities, and it was determined that the establishment was continuing to produce the jerky products, and label them with the USDA mark of inspection, after the business had requested to voluntarily stop FSIS-inspections.
No illnesses have been reported as a result of the product, but anyone who brought the jerky should either throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.
Anyone who has concerns about a potential reaction to the product should contact a healthcare provider.
The retail distribution list is not currently available but will be shared on the FSIS website when it is.
The business, which has kept the same name and products despite the change in ownership this year, describes itself on its website as being “Dedicated to crafting the finest beef jerky, using only highest quality ingredients and time-honored methods.”

Newsweek has reached out to Charles O’Neil, the current co-owner of Hickory Hollow Jerky about the recall, and the above claim made on its website, via email for comment.
The business has not spoken about the recall on its website or social media channels.
Newsweek has also reached out to Russ Robins, the previous owner of Hickory Hollow Jerky, via email for comment.
The FSIS protects Americans’ health by ensuring meat, poultry and egg products are safe to eat.
The FSIS inspection program employs almost 8,000 people and will issue a recall when it has concerns a food may be harmful.
The FSIS conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify that firms are notifying consumers of the recall, and that steps are being taken to ensure the product isn’t available to consumers.
