Jerry Jones isn’t going anywhere.
That’s the message he gave to Clarence Hill of DLLS in an exclusive interview published this weekend.
Hill spoke to Jones one-on-one, and the conversation led to the topic of his control over the team. Jones is both the team’s owner and general manager, and has held those titles since 1989.
The Cowboys won three Super Bowls in the 1990s, but haven’t been back to the Super Bowl since their last win in 1996. After nearly three decades of mostly unsuccessful seasons, could Jones look to hand over the general manager duties of the team to someone else?
“I’ve done it all. So I have an ordinate amount of confidence that f—, if anybody can figure out how to get this s— done, I can figure out how to get it done,” Jones said to Hill. “I’ve been there every which way from Sunday, and have I busted my a– a bunch, a bunch. And there’s nobody living that’s out cutting and shooting that can’t give you a bunch of times they busted their a–. So hell no, there’s nobody that could f—ing come in here and do all the contracts … and be a GM any better than I can.
He added: “Plus, I’m where the buck stops. When it f—s up, I got to cover it. And so there you can’t give anybody enough. Can’t give. There’s nobody can do it.”

The Cowboys have made the postseason 13 times since their last Super Bowl win, but have just five playoff wins to show for it. They have three consecutive 12-win seasons (including two division titles), but have just one playoff win in that time, a 2022 Wild Card victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Cowboys have a franchise quarterback in Dak Prescott, a superstar wide receiver in CeeDee Lamb, and one of the best defenses in the entire NFL. At the top, they’re led by head coach Mike McCarthy, who won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers in 2011.

The pieces seem to be there for the Cowboys, they just haven’t been able to get over the hump. But Jones doesn’t trust anyone else to get them there besides himself.
“The reason I don’t let somebody else be the GM is because I don’t have anybody that I will let do it to actually do it right,” Jones told Hill. “And they’re gonna have to come to me and because I know where it is that you’re going to pay for it.”
Jones is now 81 years old. He turns 82 in a couple months. He has no plans of giving up control over his team, if not for any other reason than the fact that he loves them so much.
“If I didn’t give a s—, if this wasn’t fun for me to do, or interesting for me to do, whatever you want to call,… the facts are, I really would rather be f—ing around like this,” Jones said. “The point is I love this. And you know I do.”
