Joint operation to recover weapons started


Operation of joint forces has started to recover illegal weapons in Bangladesh. Action will be taken against those who have not submitted the weapons and ammunition looted by the police from the police station through this operation.

The operation of the joint forces started on Tuesday (September 3) from 12 midnight. Army, Police, BGB, Ansar, Coast Guard and RAB participated in this joint operation.

According to law enforcement sources, legal action will be taken against its dealers and users, including recovery of looted weapons by the police, seizure of suspended but undelivered weapons and recovery of illegal weapons. Especially the anti-discrimination student movement which has turned into a mass movement, those found with weapons, illegal weapon display and indiscriminate firing and accused of arms cases will be arrested.

According to the sources of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Police Headquarters, the issued instructions regarding giving weapons include weapons looted from various police stations, as well as legitimate weapons. The government has suspended firearms licenses issued to civilians for the past 15 years. Tuesday (September 3) was the last day for submissions.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) also held a coordination meeting on Tuesday to formulate the action plan of the joint force and determine the strategy for its implementation.

In this context, DMP Commissioner Mainul Hasan said that the police clashed with the protestors in different parts of the country and lost their lives due to the anti-discrimination student movement. In the last three days (before and after Sheikh Hasina's government left power), police stations and outposts were attacked, vandalized and set on fire. Weapons and various tools and documents were looted at many places.

He said, in a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on August 25, firearms licenses issued to civilians from January 6, 2009 to August 5, 2024 were suspended and orders were given to submit the firearms along with ammunition to the concerned police station by September 3. According to the instructions, if the firearm is not deposited at the designated place by September 3, it will be considered as an illegal weapon. Otherwise legal action will be taken against them.
