Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell spoke to reporters on Tuesday and gave an update on star second-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

Gibbs, who injured his hamstring during practice last week, is “trending the right way” to play in Week 1 of the regular season, according to Campbell.
“He’s trending the right way,” Campbell said to reporters on Tuesday. “Wish we had more practice with him, but as far as the health of it, he is healing and he’s on schedule to be back and get his legs back under him and we’ll see where he’s at.”
Gibbs missed two games during his rookie season with a hamstring issue. He was still able to secure 1,261 total yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns and should be in for an even bigger year two.

However, he’ll want to be fully healed from his hamstring injury before taking the field in Week 1, as the last thing he or the Lions want is that issue lingering all season long.

Gibbs is one of the many Lions who have been banged up during camp. Tight end Sam LaPorta, offensive linemen Dan Skipper and Kevin Zeitler, and rookie defensive back Terrion Arnold are just a few of the Lions who have suffered injuries since training camp got underway. However, Campbell is optimistic the team will look fairly healthy come the start of the regular season.

“Our plan is to get him going next week,” Campbell said of Gibbs. “He’s trending the right way, and we’re hoping the day after the Pittsburgh game, I think we’re going to get a lot of guys back, hopefully, Sunday, and hopefully they’ll get in next week’s practice before Rams and then we’ll do Rams practice.”
The Lions open the regular season on Sunday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams in a rematch of last year’s NFC Wild Card matchup. The game is filled with storylines, as it’s a battle between Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford, the two quarterbacks traded in what has turned into one of the most consequential trades in NFL history. Gibbs will hope to be part of that game as both teams look to start the 2024 season off on the right foot.
