The Los Angeles Lakers will head into the 2024-25 season with expectations that they aren’t quite accustomed to, given their rich history. The Lakers are viewed as a middle-of-the-pack team and have the same pieces as in the previous season.

Although the Lakers are led by superstar duo LeBron James and Anthony Davis, L.A. still has a long way to go before being considered a champion contender. Nonetheless, the Lakers hope to compete with the best as constructed and alongside the guidance and leadership of first-time head coach JJ Redick.
The Lakers have given Redick the chance to coach one of the greatest franchises in sports history, and they have hope he will be the next great head coach in the NBA. He has a long way to go in that, but that isn’t stopping pundits and fans from having high hopes for Redick.
Magic Johnson reacts as he speaks to the press resigning as Los Angeles Lakers President of Basketball Operations before the game against the Portland Trail Blazers at Staples Center on April 09, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. Johnson says Laker fans need to be patient with JJ Redick.

While that may be the case, fans must realize they need to pump the breaks, especially in Redick’s first season, and no one understands that better than Lakers legend and NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson.
Johnson spoke to Sports Central L.A.’s Jim Hill and said the fanbase needs to give the new head coach some time to learn.
“We as Lakers fans gotta give JJ Redick, our new coach, some time to really help him understand how to utilize the talent, how to coach the talent, and then also what schemes will work, and what schemes won’t work,” Johnson said.
“Because this is not going to be easy for him. But I think having LeBron as your captain (helps) and one of the greatest that’s ever laced them up in AD, and they showed Laker fans and basketball fans around the world what they’re capable of doing in the Olympics.”
While Johnson is right, there is little to zero patience when it comes to this version of the Lakers. James is entering his age 40 season, and the end of his career is near.
Although he is still at the top of his game, James is still the oldest player in the league and won’t be around for much longer. Before we know it, James will have retired, and soon, Davis will be the face of the team that needs a fellow star or superstar by his side to bring the Lakers another title.
That may be unfair to Redick, but that’s the truth when it comes to the purple and gold. It may be Redick’s first coaching gig, but a lot of pressure will be on him, fair or unfair, especially the front office, to build a solid roster around James and Davis.
