The internet is becoming an increasingly important aspect of everyday modern life—according to Statista, the average daily user spent around 6.4 hours online every day in 2023.
Be it for communication, work, or entertainment, demand is growing for access to fast and dependable connections.
Newsweek has mapped which countries have the fastest internet speeds, according to figures compiled by Data Pandas.
The site said it drew on 2022 data from the Speedtest Global Index – which tracks broadband download speed, upload speed and latency.
The report didn’t include data for a few nations, including South Sudan, North Korea, the Republic of Congo and Kosovo.
For some countries absent from Data Pandas’ report, recent data from Statista was used.
The five countries with the fastest internet speeds, according to the data, were:
- Monaco
- Singapore
- Hong Kong
- Romania
- Switzerland
At the top of the list was Monaco, which, according to the report, had an average broadband speed of 261.82 megabits per second (Mbps).
Coming in second was Singapore with 255.83 Mbps, closely followed by Hong Kong with 254.70 Mbps.
In fourth and fifth places were Romania and Switzerland, with 232.17 and 229.96 Mbps, respectively.
The U.S. ranked 13th overall. The average American broadband speed was 203.81, the report said.
At the other end of the spectrum, the five worst countries in terms of internet speeds were:
- Cuba
- Turkmenistan
- Yemen
- Sudan
- Equatorial Guinea
The country with the slowest internet speeds, according to the data, was Cuba. The island nation had an average broadband speed of just 4.01 Mbps.
Faring only slightly better was Turkmenistan, with 4.11 Mbps.
Yemen, Sudan, and Equatorial Guinea also ranked down low, with average speeds of 7.59, 7.92 and 7.95, respectively.
Interested in other global comparisons? Newsweek has mapped which countries have high-speed rail projects either operational or in progress.
China led here, with the largest network globally. The country boasts over 40,000 kilometers (24,855 miles) of operational high-speed rail lines, according to a 2023 report from the International Railway Union.
Newsweek has also mapped the most religious countries in the world, according to surveys conducted by the Pew Research Center.
Of the countries included in the surveys, Indonesia ranked first, with 98 percent of respondents saying religion was very important in their lives.
It was followed by Senegal, Pakistan, Mali and Tanzania.
Just over 40 percent of citizens in the U.S. said religion was very important in their lives.
