Map Shows Which States Have Hosted the Most DNCs

Thousands of Democratic politicians, speakers and supporters will descend on Chicago’s United Center as the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) kicks off this week in Illinois.

Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to formally accept the nomination for her party after securing enough delegates to support her bid for the White House earlier this month. Harris will be joined by her recently announced running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, on the Democratic ticket.

This week’s proceedings in Chicago are hardly the first time Illinois has played host to the event. Newsweek has mapped which states have hosted the most DNCs over the years.

The top two states that have hosted the most Democratic National Conventions are Illinois and Maryland. Illinois leads, with Chicago being the most frequent host city, welcoming the DNC a record 12 times as of 2024.

Maryland follows with nine conventions in the state over the years – all held in Baltimore, in 1832, 1835, 1840, 1844, 1848, 1852, 1860, 1872 and 1912.

New York has hosted five DNCs. This includes the convention of 1924, which is remembered for being the longest continuous session in DNC history – taking 16 days to nominate a presidential candidate.

Missouri has also hosted five times, with St. Louis having held the DNC four times and an additional convention hosted in Kansas City.

California has seen four DNCs – in 1920, 1960, 1984 and 2000. Pennsylvania played host three times, and Colorado twice.

Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Wisconsin, New Jersey and Massachusetts have all hosted once.

This year, the DNC returns to Chicago, marking its 12th convention in the Windy City. The convention is scheduled to run from Monday to Thursday.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are both expected to speak on Monday, with Axios reporting that an appearance from former presidential candidate and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is also anticipated. Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama are set to speak on Tuesday, according to reports.

Wednesday could see speeches delivered by former President Bill Clinton, Representative Nancy Pelosi and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Walz will likely deliver his vice presidential acceptance speech.

Newsweek has previously mapped which states have produced the most vice presidents.

Harris is expected to formally accept her party’s presidential nomination during the final night of the convention.

This week’s DNC follows the Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, last month. Ohio Sen. JD Vance accepted the Republican 2024 nomination for vice president during the event, which came shortly after the attempted assassination of his running mate, former President Donald Trump.
