With a talented running back room in his arsenal, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel won’t have one go-to-guy.

“Just trying to get individuals opportunities, and let those opportunities shape their overall breadth of how many touches they get in the course of a game,” McDaniel told the media on Monday. “I think it’s important to make sure that guys have the opportunity to get a couple carries. You feel, ‘This dude is having one of his days, we better lean on this guy.’ Just to get everybody involved is important for me, and then letting the game take its course on whose competitive edge we’re gonna lean on the most.”

Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane are the leading duo in the Miami backfield, but rookie Jaylen Wright might see some action throughout the season.
Mostert is coming off a dominant season where he earned his first Pro Bowl and NFL Top 100 honors.
The 32-year-old had the best year of his nine-year career in the NFL after scoring a franchise-record 18 touchdowns in 2023. Mostert led the league with 21 scrimmage touchdowns and posted 1,012 yards on the ground.
The 2023 season was a resurgence for the running back given the last time he recorded a 1,000-yard season was in 2016.
Achane had a stellar rookie season in 2023, but his year was shortened due to injury. In 11 games, Achane rushed for 800 yards on 103 carries with eight scores. The rookie also added 27 catches for 197 yards and three touchdowns.
Achane will likely see an increase in production his sophomore season since McDaniel said he’s going to utilize whoever is “hot” that day.
“Year 2, you kind of let everything settle, understand much more of the whys of everything that you do and for him, the more he can understand within the offense, the more ways he can get the ball,” McDaniel told NFL.com of Achane. “He had outstanding ball production, some of which I know he feels specifically that there’s more out there from the opportunities he had last year.”
Wright was selected by the Dolphins in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft, at No. 120 overall. Although he joins a crowded running back room in Miami, it’s expected that McDaniel will find a way to employ his speed at some point this season.
McDaniel’s refusal to commit to one main running back is a testament to the talent in Miami’s backfield.
