NASCAR Team Reacts to Huge Penalty as Denny Hamlin Loses Playoff Hopes

Denny Hamlin and his team, Joe Gibbs Racing, have faced a substantial penalty following an engine inspection violation. Toyota Racing Development, which handles engine management for Hamlin’s team, has accepted responsibility for the breach of regulation.

The issue arose when Hamlin’s race-winning engine from Bristol was inappropriately handled. Rather than being sent to NASCAR for a mandatory teardown and inspection, it was returned to TRD’s facility in Costa Mesa.

There, the engine was dissembled and rebuilt, which is a direct violation of NASCAR’s strict regulations. This misstep stopped NASCAR from being able to perform essential verifications to confirm the legality of the engine.

David Wilson, President of TRD, issued a detailed apology, acknowledging the oversight:

“As the engine builder for our partner NASCAR Cup Series teams, TRD is solely responsible for handling and disposition of all our engines pre and post-race,” Wilson stated, via Bob Pockrass.

“Despite procedures being in place, Denny’s race-winning engine from Bristol was mistakenly returned to our Costa Mesa facility, disassembled and rebuilt instead of being torn down and inspected by NASCAR per the rulebook.

“Although we know with absolute certainty that the engine was legal and would have passed inspection, we left NASCAR in an impossible position because they were not given the opportunity to properly inspect our engine.”

Following the discovery, NASCAR imposed eye-watering penalties on the team and driver. Hamlin and Joe Gibbs were docked 75 points and 10 playoff points. Chris Gabehart, the crew chief, faced a $100,000 fine.

To make matters worse, Hamlin’s Bristol win was invalidated for NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs eligibility. However, Hamlin still qualifies for the playoffs due to victories in other races.

Before the penalty, Hamlin was a strong contender in the playoffs, positioned as the second seed with 2,029 points. The penalty drove him down to the sixth, leaving him with 2,016 points.

Wilson admitted that measures have now been put in place for TRD to prevent future lapses.

“We have reviewed our processes and have implemented several additional steps to ensure that this never happens again,” he assured. “TRD takes full responsibility for this grievous mistake, and we apologize to Denny, Chris [Gabehart], Coach [Joe] Gibbs and the entire JGR organization, NASCAR, and our fans.”

NASCAR also released a statement:

“Each race-winning engine must be inspected by NASCAR once the race team determines that its life cycle is complete. In this instance, prior to presenting the engine to NASCAR for inspection, Toyota Racing Development disassembled and rebuilt the No. 11’s Bristol-winning race engine.

“Per the NASCAR Rule Book, this violation results in an L2 penalty to the race team and driver. Toyota Racing Development self-reported this violation.”
