Natural disasters will increase by 40 percent in the world by 2030

Natural disasters will increase by 40 percent worldwide by 2030 due to climate change. Marco Toscano-Rivalta, head of the Asia and Pacific region of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, gave this warning.

The United Nations has announced a ministerial conference of countries in the Asia-Pacific region on the issue of reducing the risk of natural disasters at a press conference in Manila, the capital of the Philippines on Friday. This conference will be held in October. Marco Toscano Rivalta was present at that press conference on Friday.

This UN official said at the press conference, “We have already moved away from the agreement we made in 2015 called the Sendai Framework to reduce natural disasters around the world. Due to our various activities, the risk of natural disasters has increased rather than decreased in the last few years. This is why we need to increase our preparedness and skills to deal with natural disasters.”

This conference on natural disaster risk reduction in the Asia-Pacific region is known as the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction or APMCDRR. A total of 2,500 delegates from 62 countries in the Asia-Pacific region are expected to participate in the conference that will be held next October.

Marco Toscano-Rivalta said at the press conference that the United Nations expects the Philippines to be a leader in natural disaster risk reduction programs in the Asia-Pacific region. He also highlighted the arguments in favor of this expectation.

“The Philippines is a model in dealing with natural disaster risk through coordination and inclusion among various stakeholders. The Philippines has shown how to connect or involve governments, local governments, civil society, science and academia, the private sector and local communities on the issue of natural disaster risk reduction,” Marco said at the press conference.
