NFL Makes Change to Tush Push for 2024 Season

The “tush push” is going to look a little different during the 2024-25 NFL season.

While there were discussions about potentially banning the tush push in 2024, the league decided to keep it but amend it.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, a rule clarification has altered the tush push. The “pushers” will now be required to stand at least one yard behind the quarterback before the ball is snapped. The new alignment eliminates an immediate shove by the players behind the quarterback.

The tush push has become a highly talked about topic over the last few seasons. The Philadelphia Eagles have perfected the move, which has quarterback Jalen Hurts lined up under center with two players right behind him.

After snapping the ball, Hurts then gets shoved forward by his teammates, which has led to success a majority of the time. The Eagles utilize the play instead of a quarterback sneak and tend to do it on 4th and short or 4th and goal from near the goal line.

The play’s seemingly unstoppable nature led to discourse about the league banning it. However, in the end, the league decided that this change would be enough to allow the play to stand for at least this season.

While the Eagles have perfected the tush push, they aren’t the only team that uses it. No team has done it better than Philadelphia, though, as they’ve somewhat become the face of the play.

The Eagles will look to perfect the new-look tush push on Friday night as they open their season against the Green Bay Packers in Brazil. This is the league’s first-ever game in Brazil and the first Friday night game during the league’s opening weekend in over 50 years.

Hurts and the Eagles will look to start their 2024 season on the right foot after a disappointing end to the 2023 season. After opening the season 10-1, the Eagles lost five of their final six regular season games, and then were dominated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round.

The Eagles will hope to start 1-0 on Friday, as the Packers look to continue their hot streak dating back to the end of last season. The Packers finished the regular season winning three straight games and seven of their last 10. They then upset the Dallas Cowboys during Wild Card weekend before narrowly losing to the San Francisco 49ers.
