Patriots Have Made Decision on Starting Quarterback for Week 1

The New England Patriots have made a decision on their starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season.

Head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters on Wednesday that he knows who will be starting Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals — he just hasn’t told them yet.

Since Mayo hasn’t yet informed the players, he also didn’t want to make a public announcement. He said he will speak to the players on Thursday, and then make an announcement sometime after that.

“I’m gonna talk to the individual players tomorrow,” Mayo said on Wednesday. “I’m gonna have a team meeting tomorrow and then I’m gonna get it to you guys.”

The Patriots quarterback competition is a two-man race between veteran Jacoby Brissett and rookie first-round pick Drake Maye. Brissett signed a one-year, $8 million deal with the Patriots in March. In April, the Patriots spent the No. 3 overall pick on Maye.

Going into camp, it appeared that Brissett had the inside track to the starting job. However, recently, Mayo said that Maye has “outplayed” Brissett thus far in camp and the preseason.

“This is a true competition, and I would say at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby,” Mayo said Monday on WEEI’s ‘The Greg Hill Show.’ “Now in saying that, we have to take in the full body of work, going all the way back to the spring and beginning of training camp. And we’ll see where we end up. But those are the conversations that will happen here over the next couple of days.”

On Wednesday, while Mayo didn’t give much information on who he will choose, he did give a little insight into the decision-making process.

“I think it’s important to remember what’s good for the team today may not be good for the team weeks down the line. The challenge is, you want to win every single game now, but also we’re trying to build something special here.”
