People do not support upazila elections either: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the government has gone a long way to establish a one-party bank. This is their strategy. After the cloak of democracy, the election is showing drama, it is not an election. They are afraid to vote fairly because of the misdeeds they have committed in the last 15 years. People do not support the upazila elections that are being held now. It does not really reflect the judgment of the people.

He said these things while addressing a memorial meeting at Dhaka Reporters Unity in Segunbagicha on Tuesday (May 21) as the chief guest.

The commemoration meeting was held on the occasion of the seventh death anniversary of Jatiya Democratic Party (JAGPA) founder president Shafiul Alam Pradhan on the initiative of a section of the party.

Addressing the activists, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “We should never give up, we should walk with the ball in our chest.” We have repeatedly said that we do not do politics to get power. We want a fair election, we want people's right to vote. Why is the Awami League so afraid of this? Because of the fear that the misdeeds they have done will be found out. The main demand of independence movement was democracy, that spirit was destroyed by Awami League. Now when they want to take the country to one-party rule, the main obstacle is BNP.

He said, “Where is the young society, does this state of the country not stir them up for change?” BNP Secretary General said, “We do not know any other way, there is no alternative to agitation.” People have to come out, stand up.

He also said that the government has used all the institutions including law enforcement and judiciary to suppress the opposition leaders and activists. Such journalists do not have the freedom to write and express their opinions.

Fakhrul said that those involved in corruption and loss have been given the responsibility of those banks. They looted the wealth of the entire country.

Mirza Fakhrul called on everyone to unite again to demand free and fair elections and said, I will establish a people's government by defeating this horrible demonic government, Inshallah. We should never give up, we walk with the ball in our chest.
