Pheni electricity cut off, people's suffering is extreme

Eight districts of the country, including Feni, Noakhali, were hit by heavy rains and floods in India's upstream waters. One after another, the townships are drowning as the water is entering at high speed through the breached flood control dams of the Muhuri, Kahua and Ceylon rivers.

More than 350,000 people of Feni have been cut off due to the flood. All communication has also been cut off.

On Wednesday night, the water of Muhuri, Kahua and Ceylonia rivers was seen flowing above the danger level of 86 cm. Nothing was spared from the streets and houses in the flood. Two lakh people of three upazilas drowned in boiling water. Relatives who are outside are unable to communicate as there is no electricity in the area for two days.

A missing person was reported last Tuesday. But after two days, there was no trace of him. His identity was not immediately known.

More than 40 villages of Sadar Union, Anandpur, Munsirhat, Amjadhat Union of Fulgazi Upazila have been flooded. More than 45 villages including Mirzanagar, Chithlia, Buxmahmud and Pursharam in Parashuram are under water. Several villages of Pathan Nagar, Radhanagar, Shubopur Union of Chagalnaya have also experienced floods.

District Electricity Development Board Executive Engineer Hossain Mahmud Shamim Farhad said that about 70 percent of customers are without electricity. Meters have been damaged due to ingress of water in various areas, so power will remain off until the water recedes.

Sub-Divisional Engineer of Feni Water Development Board (PUBO). Abul Kashem said, water is entering the locality through the 27 broken parts of the flood control dam of Muhuri-Kahua-Silonia river due to Indian hill slopes and continuous rain.

At the beginning of last month, erosion occurred in 15 places of Muhuri, Kahua and Ceyloniya rivers. After repairs at those places, the dam broke at 12 more places earlier this month, flooding more than 100 villages. Damage to infrastructure, rice, crops and fish exceeded 30 crores. After 15 days there was flood again.
