President has accepted the resignation of 4 commissioners including CEC


The President accepted the resignation of 4 Election Commissioners including the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Sahabuddin.

The President's press wing confirmed the matter on Thursday (September 5).

Earlier, CEC Kazi Habibul Awal formally resigned from the commission during a 'courtesy exchange' with journalists at 12 noon today.

Incidentally, former senior secretary Kazi Habibul Awal was appointed as CEC on February 26, 2022. Besides, retired Brigadier General Ahsan Habib Khan, former district and session judge Begum Rashida Sultana, former senior secretary Md. Alamgir and former senior secretary Anichur Rahman.

Under this commission, at the beginning of this year, Awami League won 223 seats, Independent 56, Jatiya Party 11, Jasad, Workers Party and Kalyan Party won one seat each out of 299 seats in the one-party 12th National Parliament Election. This election was mainly between groups.

Qazi Habibul Awal read out a written statement to the journalists at the press conference. Habibul Awal said that there was no government influence as the 12th national parliament election was one-party. It wasn't necessary.

Since the last parliamentary elections, opposition political parties including BNP have been agitating for the resignation of the Election Commission along with the government.

The interim government was formed after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5 in the face of the mass movement of students. Since then there have been demands for the resignation of Kazi Habibul Awal Commission.
